For an NJROTC cadet to be TRUST and FAA drone pilot certified means they have completed two important certifications related to drone operation:

  1. TRUST Certification: The Recreational UAS Safety Test (TRUST) is required for recreational drone pilots. It demonstrates basic knowledge of drone safety and regulations for hobbyist use.

  2. FAA Drone Pilot Certification: This refers to obtaining a Remote Pilot Certificate under the FAA's Part 107 regulations, which allows for commercial drone operations. To achieve this, the cadet must:

    1. Be at least 16 years old

    2. Pass the initial aeronautical knowledge exam ("Unmanned Aircraft General – Small")

    3. Be able to read, speak, write, and understand English

    4. Be in a physical and mental condition to safely fly a drone

Having both certifications indicates that the cadet is qualified for both recreational and commercial drone operations. This demonstrates their commitment to aviation safety and regulations, as well as their ability to operate advanced technology responsibly.

These certifications can provide several benefits for the cadet:

  1. Career opportunities: It opens up potential career paths in various industries using drones, such as real estate, agriculture, construction, and security.

  2. Military relevance: For those interested in military careers, especially in naval aviation, this certification provides valuable experience with aviation terms and weather, giving them a head start.

  3. College applications: The certifications can enhance college applications, demonstrating discipline and technical skills.

  4. Practical skills: Cadets can apply their skills in JROTC activities, such as participating in drone competitions or assisting with aerial photography for their unit13.
